On Sunday, May 20, 2012, Kalamazoo Public Safety officers set up a directed patrol in the 1000 block of Portage Rd, focusing on male johns soliciting female prostitutes. This area is considered a high crime area for prostitution.
During the operation, 3 male Kalamazoo residents were arrested for charges to include Solicitation and Possession of Marijuana. All three subjects were able to post bond and later released.

Kalamazoo, MI: On Saturday, May 19, 2012 at approximately 11:45 p.m., Kalamazoo Public Safety officers responded to a report of an apartment fire at the Cooper apartments located in the in the 400 block of Pearl St. Upon arrival, heavy smoke was found from an apartment located on the first floor. Responding officers quickly extinguished the fire confining the damage to the kitchen area of the apartment.
Through the course of the investigation, it was determined that a male suspect had forced his way into the apartment and intentionally ignited the fire.
The suspect, a 29 year-old Chicago resident, is currently lodged at the Kalamazoo County jail on the charges of home invasion and arson pending review of this investigation by the prosecutor’s office.

Kalamazoo, MI: On May 12, 2012 at approximately 1220 p.m., Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers responded to the 4900 block of Parkview after dispatchers received reports of a multiple car accident.
Responding officers found a 4 car accident. Public Safety Officer used extrication equipment to remove one of the injured parties. One driver was transported to an area hospital and has been listed in critical condition, and two other drivers were transported for what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries. Parkview has been closed down and remains closed at this time—it is expected to be opened to traffic by 3:00 p.m. this afternoon.
The accident remains under investigation at this time.

Commercial Air Conditioner Units Stolen
Kalamazoo, MI: Kalamazoo Public Safety has been investigating an increase in the theft of commercial air conditioner units stolen from area office buildings. Officers have investigated six incidents where air conditioning units have been removed from outside of local office buildings in the last month. It appears the thieves are targeting the copper located within these air conditioners.
All six of these incidents have occurred just south of downtown Kalamazoo, three in the 900 block of John St., one in the 1700 block of S. Park St., one in the 900 block of Gibson St. and one in the 600 block of S. Rose St.
Kalamazoo Public Safety would like to notify businesses and residents of these thefts and encourage business owners to clear brush and other items away from air conditioning units to make them more visible for officers on patrol. The addition of security lighting around these units would also assist in deterring criminals. Residents are encouraged to contact Public Safety should they observe people on business property in the late night or early morning hours.

40 Year Old Dies From Stab Wound
Kalamazoo, MI: This morning at approximately 6:13am, Public Safety Officers responded to the 800 blk. of Douglas St. on a report of a person being stabbed. Officers found a 40yr. old Kalamazoo man suffering from a serious stab wound to the chest. He was transported to Bronson Hospital and succumbed to his injuries a short time later.
The investigation discovered that the stabbing resulted from a domestic altercation he was having with a girlfriend. The female was also transported to Bronson Hospital for injuries she sustained during this altercation, she is currently listed in stable condition. Detectives have interviewed her and several witnesses, the investigation is ongoing at this time.
The victim has been identified as John Henry Kelly. Kalamazoo Public Safety extends condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Kelly.

Victim of Saturday Morning House Fire Identified
Kalamazoo, MI: Public Safety Officers responded to a report of a house fire in the 4100 block of Madison St. on Saturday, 04-28-11 at 01:30am. The lone resident of that home perished in the house fire. He has been identified as David Wayne Henry, age 64. The house fire is currently being investigated by the Kalamazoo Fire Marshal’s Office. The fire appears to be accidental at this time.
Kalamazoo Public Safety wishes to extend our condolences to the family and friends of Mr. David Wayne Henry.

Vehicle Occupants Hurt in Traffic Crash
Kalamazoo, MI:
On Saturday, April 21, 2012, at approximately 4:00a.m., KDPS officers responded to a traffic crash at W. Main/Monroe.
Upon arrival, officers found one car turned upside down on its roof, which was crushed. It appeared that the vehicle ran into a pole, causing it to land in the position it was found. Extrication was utilized to remove the occupants from the vehicle and they were both transported to Bronson Hospital via LIFE Ambulance. A 22-year-old female Kalamazoo resident is still at the hospital in critical condition. A 23-year-old male Kalamazoo resident was treated and released.
The investigation is still ongoing and is being handled by the Criminal Investigations Division. Details on other specifics of this incident not mentioned here are not available at this time.

Kalamazoo, MI: On Friday, April 20, 2012, at approximately 9:30a.m., Kalamazoo Public Safety received a report of a Retail Fraud in the 2000 block of E. Cork. The store clerk reported that a female came in and loaded up her shopping cart full of items and then while the cashier was distracted, she ran out of the store with merchandise. The clerk was able to give a description and the license plate number of the vehicle to dispatchers.
An alert citizen noticed the vehicle parked at the dead end of Emerald drive and contacted KDPS. Officers responded to that location, where the stolen property was located in the vehicle, but the occupants had left the area on foot. In the bottom of a purse where the stolen property was located, the identification of a 22-year-old female Kalamazoo resident was located. A K9 track was attempted, but did not locate the suspect.
After the vehicle was towed, the female contacted dispatch to ask where she could pick up her vehicle. When she arrived to get her vehicle, she was arrested for Retail Fraud.

Kalamazoo Man Hospitalized After Shooting
Kalamazoo, MI: Public Safety Officers were sent to a report of shots fired in the 1100 block of Summit St. at 03:10am this morning. Officers located a 20yr. old Kalamazoo man suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. The victim is presently in stable condition at Bronson Hospital.
Detectives have made an arrest in this shooting. He is a 25 year old Kalamazoo resident, he is currently lodged in the Kalamazoo County Jail on a charge of Assault with Intent to Murder.

Pedestrian Struck by Vehicle
Kalamazoo, MI: On April 8, 2012, shortly after 12:30 a.m., officers from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to the 300 block of E. Michigan on a report of a pedestrian struck by a motor vehicle. Witnesses at the scene advised that the vehicle that stuck the victim fled outbound on E. Michigan after the accident.
A detailed description was provided by the witnesses at the scene and within minutes a Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Deputy spotted the vehicle. The vehicle was stopped in the 1500 block of Gull Rd and after a subsequent investigation the driver, a 24 year old Galesburg resident, was arrested for Operating While Intoxicated Causing Serious Impairment and Hit and Run. The driver is currently lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail.
The victim, a 28 year old Kalamazoo resident, suffered a possible head injury as well as a broken leg. She was transported to Bronson hospital and is listed in stable condition.
