Kalamazoo, MI: On Sunday, November 18th at 11:30 p.m., Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to a reported fire at 1004 Douglas, a seven (7) story apartment building. Firefighters located an apartment on the third floor that was fully involved. The fire then spread to the apartment above on the fourth floor. While fighting the fire the fourth floor apartment collapsed.
Approximately 125 residents live in the apartment building and several were non-ambulatory and had to be carried down several flights of stairs by firefighters. Seven residents were transported to local hospitals for minor smoke inhalation however none of the injuries were considered life-threatening. Firefighters were assisted by 19 paramedics from Life and Pride Care ambulance services along with 3 doctors from Kalamazoo Medical Control.
A total of 70 firefighters from 5 area departments assisted on the scene. KDPS was assisted by Comstock, Cooper, Kalamazoo, and Oshtemo Township Fire Departments. Kalamazoo County Sheriffs Department, Kalamazoo Township Police Department, and Western Michigan University Police Department assisted with handling police calls for service while Public Safety Officers battled the three-alarm fire.
The building suffered significant smoke and water damage and all 125 residents have been displaced. The American Red Cross and the Office of Emergency Management set up a shelter at the Christian Life Center Church located next door to the apartment complex. Approximately 40 residents sought shelter at the church while the remaining residents were able to find shelter with friends or family.
